Past Perfect Continuous

It describes an action that was ongoing for a period of time before another past action or point in time, emphasizing the duration of the action, not necessarily its completion.

It is used to talk about:

  • The time that something was happening, for example: “she had been studying for the exam all week”.
  • An action that was in progress before another past action or event, for example: “we had been waiting for the train for an hour when it finally arrived”.
  • The emphasis on the process of the action rather than its result, for example: “They had been living in that house for five years when they decides to move”.
  • The difference between past perfect and past perfect continuous is the first one is when an action was completed before another past action, while the second describes an action was in progress before another past action.
