Used to and would

Both are used to describe past habits or actions that are no longer true. However, they have differences.
“Used to” can be both repeated actions and states of being while “would” is used for repeated actions.

Ambos se usan para describir hábitos o acciones pasadas que ya no son ciertas. Sin embargo, presentan diferencias. «Used to» puede referirse tanto a acciones repetidas como a estados de ánimo, mientras que «would» se usa para acciones repetidas.

Used to:

  • Describes past habits or repeated actions: I used to go to visit my mother every weekend.
  • Describes past states or conditions: I used to live in New Jersey
  • It is used for actions or states of being: I used to like cakes.
  • Negative form is: did not use to
  • It is more versatile than Would
  • Describe hábitos pasados o acciones repetidas: Solía ir a visitar a mi madre todos los fines de semana.
  • Describe estados o condiciones pasadas: Solía vivir en Nueva Jersey.
  • Se usa para acciones o estados del ser: Solía gustarme los pasteles.
  • Forma negativa es did not use to
  • Es más versátil que «Would».

Would:

  • Describes repeated actions in the past: I would go to pool every summer
  • It must establish a frame of time in the past: We would visit our parents every Sunday
  • Negative form is: would not
  • Cannot be used for states of being: You cannot say “I would live in New Jersey”
  • It is not used with stative verbs such as: love, be, understand and feel.
  • It has more restrictions.
  • You do not translate «would» literally. Instead, use the imperfect tense:
    -ar verbs: jugar → jugaba, jugabas, jugábamos…
    -er/-ir verbs: comer → comía, vivía…
  • Describe acciones repetidas en el pasado: Solía ir a la piscina todos los veranos.
  • Debe establecer un marco temporal en el pasado: Solíamos visitar a nuestros padres todos los domingos.
  • Forma negativa es would not
  • No se puede usar para estados del ser: No se puede decir: “yo solía vivir en Nueva Jersey”, usando el would.
  • No se usa con verbos de estado como amar, ser, comprender y sentir.
  • Tiene más restricciones.
  • No traduces «would» literalmente. En su lugar, utiliza el tiempo imperfecto:
    Verbos -ar: jugar → jugaba, jugabas, jugábamos
    Verbos -er/-ir: comer → comía, vivía…
